Scaling and Polishing
Despite brushing and flossing after every meal, plaque and tartar will still build up on your teeth after eating, resulting in serious gum diseases or tooth decay in the long run. Thus, it is necessary to go for routine check-ups and cleaning by dental professionals via procedures called scaling and polishing . Scaling involves the use of ultrasonic scalers to loosen and remove plaque and tartar without damaging your gums and teeth. After scaling is completed, we then carry out polishing of the teeth to remove external stains and smooth out their surfaces.
Filling (Restoration)
A dental filling is a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or otherwise damaged surfaces of the teeth. Dental filling materials, which include composite, porcelain and silver amalgam, may be used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing.
Dentist will begin the dental filling procedure by preparing the tooth and necessary surrounding areas in order to restore the damaged area. The decay or damage is removed and the area is cleansed to remove bacteria or debris before it is “filled” with the filling materials.
Amalgam fillings
Features:
-
Hard and durable; high wear resistance
-
The greyish-silver colour of amalgam is not esthetically appealing
Application:
-
Repair the teeth in the back of the mouth and able to withstand stronger bite force
Composite fillings
Features:
-
Aesthetically pleasant
-
Colour is similar to natural teeth
-
Not as hard as amalgam
Application
-
Restore the appearance of teeth, such as improving the shape of teeth
Extraction ( Tooth removal)
The tooth extraction procedure is needed if a tooth is decayed or broken beyond repair. Depending on the condition of the tooth, extraction procedures include simple extraction and surgical extraction.
1. Simple extraction
Performed on visible teeth in the mouth under local anesthesia (the tooth is loosened from its socket and then removed with dental forceps).
2. Surgical extraction
A more complicated procedure for teeth that are severely broken and cannot be removed without surgery. Dentist would inject local or general anesthetics first to paralyze teeth and oral tissues and then turn the gums up to remove the alveolar bone and expose the teeth. When the teeth become loosened, they would be taken out with dental forceps. The wound will be sutured with surgical thread and the stitches will be removed after one to two weeks.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Process:
-
During root canal treatment, dental surgeon will take X-rays of the infected tooth to understand the shape and length of the root canal;
-
Local anesthesia will be given to the patient as needed, and then tooth root disinfection will be performed;
-
Afterwards, dental surgeon will remove the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully clean and shape the inside of the canal, a channel inside the root, then fill and seal the space to prevent bacterial invasion.
-
A crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. After restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
Dental Implant
A dental implant is a bio-compatible (titanium) structure embedded in the jawbone used to support false teeth, such as dentures, bridges or crowns. The advantages of implant supported teeth are that they do not require grinding down neighboring teeth, and they resemble real teeth perfectly. Also, it helps to reduce bone resorption, and preserve the thickness of bone. Implant can replace one or more missing teeth, and it can support a full mouth denture when all teeth are lost.
An individual’s suitability for implant treatments is determined by his or her general and oral health conditions.
After washing the teeth, the swollen gums will shrink. After the gums recede, the teeth may become sensitive, and you will feel pain when eating hot and cold or sweet and sour food. When necessary, use anti-allergic toothpaste to relieve pain.
Denture
A denture is a removable set of false teeth that is used to replace missing teeth in the mouth. Denture will help you to restore chewing function and articulation. In addition, it will also help enhance your mouth's appearance and correct abnormal bite.
Denture Types:
We provide two types of dentures at Smith & Jain, complete and partial dentures.
1. Complete Dentures
Complete Dentures are fitted in when all of the teeth within a jaw have been lost. The denture is a removable appliance made after all of the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. Dental implants may also be fitted in to support the dentures.
2. Partial Dentures
When you have one or more teeth remaining, either in the upper or lower jaw, then partial dentures would be a more appropriate treatment measure. A partial denture fill will prevent other teeth from changing position. Partial dentures are removable and natural looking appliances to help you restore the form and function of your jaw. These partial dentures can be made up of plastic or metal with plastic.
Crowns
A crown refers to the placement of an artificial crown on a tooth. When a tooth is fractured, extensively filled or severely decayed posing a high risk of fracture, the placement of a crown may be recommended to strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure in order to restore the tooth back to its normal size, shape and function.
